LGBTQIA+ gamers deserve to see characters that reflect our experiences, struggles, and joys. They’re built with love and for the people who truly care about them. Butterfly Soup (Teen Visual Novel)

  • Platform(s): PC, macOS
  • Steam Deck Compatibility: Unsupported 🚫

Butterfly Soup follows the lives of four LGBTQIA+ Asian-American teens as they navigate friendship, romance, and their shared love of baseball.

The subject/theme of these works may or may not be about LGBTQIA+ culture and identities and can be highly varied. Ace in Space gives you the choice to date up to five different individuals, or not date anyone at all; it is your story to unveil. The main protagonist initially identifies as male, but transforms into a woman and back during the story, and parts of the narrative focus on them coming to terms with their gender and sexual identities.

As is in the name, you are a dad looking to date other dads. Manami takes the role of her supportive friend, helping create a positive atmosphere throughout Haru’s challenges. Thus, allowing players to connect with the material on a much deeper level. Chase, the protagonist, is a bisexual man who is attracted to all of his friend group, including Jenna, the sole woman of the group, who he can be in a relationship with in her route should he come out to her as bisexual.

  • Far Beyond the World: Part of the story is the growing romance between Ranok and Caelan that the two need to keep secret, as LGBTQIA+ people are seen as "defective" in the wolves' society.
  • Fate/stay night: In the uncensored version, tritagonist Rin Tohsaka is bisexual and discovers this during a sex scene with deuteragonist Saber (a girl) and protagonist Shirou (a guy); the rest of the story has her continue expressing affection towards Saber while also being able to have sex with Shirou.

There’s an often-overlooked side plot involving two other characters that deeply enriches the narrative; telling a story of unrequited love, homophobia, and missed opportunities. The story touches on mental health, identity, and the struggles of growing up. She can forgive her bully in the end or realise that she's not worth it and find a girl who genuinely likes her for her.

It’s a small detail, but in a game built around comfort and self-expression, it speaks volumes. It also really helps that it’s free to play and is available on android and iOS.
